AWE admits safety breach over 2010 Aldermaston fire

AWE has today plead guilty at Reading Crown Court to failing to properly protect its workers during the serious fire in an explosives building in August 2010. A worker who had been manufacturing explosives was burnt when a fireball erupted in his face. He had not been provided with suitable safety clothing and had been working for over 12 hours when the accident happened. Fourteen local residents were evacuated due to the fire. AWE accepted that it failed to meet its safety responsibilities and as a result a member of staff was injured and the lives of the local were community disrupted.

Sentencing will take place at a later date.
